Ciao Champions League: A Time for Change

After being eliminated by a superior Arsenal at the San Siro, Milan must come to terms with that the time for a change in every aspect must come now. Arsenal came into San Siro with no fear and they took control from the very start. They played with class and determination and embarrassed Milan in their own turf. The defending Champions just could not do anything against the young gunners. The young but very mature Cesc Fabregas led his team to a great 2-0 victory in one of the worlds most difficult stadiums. Justice was served. Milan now have no real silverware to compete for. So much for world champions. The game was disappointing in every way Milan failed to move to the next round, they played horribly and worst of all Maldini played his last game in the European stage. Not the way a legend deserves to leave.

However, there is no time to grieve. Milan is an a state of emergency and I dare say in a crisis. A recurring theme that the press made was youth vs experience and it proved that experience just couldn't this time. Milan are an ageing team and it is time that the heads over at Milan realize it. Milan are and have been in need of newer players for a long time now. It is a shame that a grand club like Milan is not fighting both for the domestic league and the Champions League. I stated in one of my previous post before the current season started that Milan were going to have a hard time if they didn't get fresh players. It has proven to be true.

I am not against older players i actually think that it is necessary to have veterans that show discipline and experience to younger players. But when the squad does not have replacements for them on the bench and they start to depend on a single player, this is when the problems begin. Milan does not have depth on the bench, there are no key players that can come in to a match and deliver results. Milan's best players are only on the field and they have no backups on the bench like other clubs (Inter, Barca, Man Untd.) A radical change must come and to start with Ancelotti must go.

He gave the club many joys but his time is up. No Champions league and Milan are suffering in Seria A. He failed to recognize that Milan needed new players and should be held responsible for the defeat. Names like Lippi and Mourinho are already going around and in my opinion i prefer Lippi. Every line in Milan needs to be changed or at least find suitable replacements for them. From the goalkeeper to the strikers need to be improved. It is time for President Berlusconi not to be greedy and open up his wallet to revitalize the squad this summer.

As Ancelotti stated Milan do have Champions League in their DNA and Milan need to be with all the other great clubs in the greatest stage of all for European Clubs. This is what is expected of them, nothing less. The next 12 games left in Seria A will be crucial for Milan and the future of many players.
